Flower Substitutions Explained
How bouquet substitutions should protect palette, value, household safety and customer approval.
A substitution policy explains what may change when a listed flower is unavailable. The seller should preserve the purchased design boundaries and never override strict safety, allergy or no-substitution instructions without approval.
Step 1
Exact and style-led products are different
An exact product promises listed ingredients within clearly stated tolerances. A style-led or designer’s-choice product promises a palette, size and overall feeling while allowing the maker to select current flowers.
Both can be honest offers, but the listing must tell the customer which one they are buying before payment.
Step 2
The policy needs meaningful boundaries
“Substitutions may occur” is not enough by itself. A useful policy explains whether the seller may change flower variety, colour shade, foliage, vessel or overall format and how comparable value is maintained.
A different flower can carry different fragrance, pet-safety or cultural implications. Those are not merely cosmetic changes and require special care.
Step 3
Strict requirements need confirmation
Customers should identify allergies, household pets, cultural requirements and absolute colour or flower exclusions before ordering. The seller must accept those constraints or decline the product.
If a material change becomes necessary after purchase, the customer should be offered a choice such as approval, another product, a different date or cancellation under the applicable terms.

Only within the published policy or with approval. The vessel is part of the product when it is included in the listing.
What if I cannot accept any substitution?
Choose an exact-inventory product and state the restriction before purchase. The seller must confirm it rather than treating a note as automatic acceptance.
Flower types, professional mechanics and delivery conditions vary. A seller’s care card and confirmed order terms take priority over general educational guidance.
