Why woody branches, soft garden stems, bulbs and mixed bouquets may need different handling.
Use the seller’s care instructions for the actual stems. A technique that helps one flower can damage another, so avoid applying one aggressive cutting or conditioning method to every bouquet.
Step 1
Soft and hollow stems need gentle support
Soft seasonal flowers can bruise or collapse when squeezed, while hollow stems may split if handled roughly. Use sharp clean tools only when recutting is recommended and choose a vase that supports rather than compresses them.
Do not force floral wire, skewers or other objects into stems as a home repair. Ask the seller how the design is meant to stand.
Step 2
Woody stems are not all treated alike
Branches and woody flowering stems may need different preparation from roses or tulips. Splitting, hammering or peeling stems without guidance can create damage and unsafe tool use.
A florist or grower may condition woody material before sale. Preserve that work with clean water and the recommended vessel rather than automatically recutting every stem.
Step 3
Mixed bouquets age in stages
A mixed bouquet combines stems with different natural lifespans. When one flower fades, remove it cleanly and reassess the design instead of discarding everything at once.
Keep the waterline free of foliage and watch for fallen petals or pollen. If a flower presents a household safety concern, remove the entire relevant stem safely rather than only the visible bloom.
