How to Care for Cut Flowers
A practical cut-flower care routine for preparing a vase, refreshing water and placing a bouquet at home.
Start with a clean vase and fresh water, keep foliage above the waterline, follow the seller’s care card and move the bouquet away from heat and direct sun. Refresh the water as it becomes cloudy or the seller recommends.
Step 1
Prepare the vase before unwrapping
Wash the vase so old plant material and residue are not carried into the new arrangement. Choose a vessel that supports the stems without squeezing them together, then add fresh water and the supplied flower food according to its packet directions.
Remove only packaging that the seller says is safe to remove. Hand-tied bouquets may use binding to preserve the design, while a wrapped market bunch may be intended for you to arrange. When in doubt, keep the tie in place until you have read the care card.
Step 2
Keep leaves out of the water
Foliage sitting below the waterline breaks down and makes the vase harder to keep clean. Remove submerged leaves carefully without stripping decorative foliage that remains above the water.
If the seller recommends recutting, use a clean sharp tool and work safely on a stable surface. Some arranged products use floral mechanics or delicate stems that should not be dismantled, so product-specific instructions take priority over a generic routine.
Step 3
Choose a cooler place and observe the bouquet
Display cut flowers away from radiators, hot appliances, strong direct sun and other sources of heat. A cooler, stable location generally reduces stress on the arrangement and makes it easier to avoid accidental spills.
Check the water and remove individual spent stems as the bouquet ages. Mixed arrangements do not finish all at once; editing one declining flower can let the remaining stems continue to look intentional.
