What Is Flower Food for Cut Flowers?

Commercial flower food is formulated for cut flowers and is meant to be mixed with a specified amount of water. Use the packet exactly as labelled; an overly strong or weak mix is not the same treatment.
Step 1
The packet and water work together
A flower-food packet is not designed to be poured directly into a vase without measuring. Its directions specify how much clean water to use. If the vase holds less, scale only when the label provides a safe way to do so or prepare the full amount in a separate clean container.
Different commercial products can have different instructions. Keep the original packet with the bouquet until the recipient has read it instead of relying on a remembered recipe.
Step 2
Flower food does not replace vase hygiene
A clean vase, clean tools and foliage kept above the waterline remain part of care. Adding food to a dirty vessel does not remove decomposing leaves or old residue.
When the water needs to be replaced, use a new correctly mixed solution if the seller supplied enough product. Do not keep adding concentrated powder to old water.
Step 3
Be cautious with homemade substitutes
Home recipes vary widely and can be measured incorrectly. Household ingredients are not automatically equivalent to a tested commercial product, and mixtures involving cleaning products can create avoidable handling risks.
If no packet is available, clean water, a clean vase and good placement are a sensible baseline. Ask the seller for flower-specific guidance instead of experimenting on a time-sensitive arrangement.
