How to Choose a Vase for a Bouquet
Match vase height, opening and stability to a loose bouquet or hand-tied flower arrangement.
Choose a clean, stable vase with an opening that supports the bouquet without crushing it. The flower heads should sit comfortably above the rim while enough stem remains in water.
Step 1
Start with the bouquet format
A compact hand-tied bouquet may need a narrower opening to hold its shape. A loose garden bunch needs more room for stems to spread, while tall line flowers benefit from a vessel that provides support lower down.
If the arrangement arrives in its own vessel, do not transfer it simply for appearance. The design may use mechanics or a water system intended to stay in place.
Step 2
Check height and opening together
A very tall vase can hide too much of a shorter bouquet, while a short vase may let heavy stems lean or tip. Test the proportion while the stems are still wrapped and protect the flower heads from the rim.
The opening should not force stems into a tight bundle. At the same time, a wide bowl with only a few tall stems may not provide enough support.
Step 3
Prioritize stability and cleaning
Choose a base that remains stable once water and flowers are added, especially around children, pets or busy tables. Place it on a level surface away from electronics and valuable papers.
A beautiful vase is less useful if its neck cannot be cleaned. Before reuse, make sure you can reach or thoroughly rinse all interior surfaces and remove old residue.
