How to Dry a Flower Bouquet
Decide whether a bouquet is suitable for air-drying and preserve it without promising identical colour or shape.
Not every fresh flower dries well. Ask the seller which stems are suitable, remove declining material and dry a manageable bundle in a dark, dry, well-ventilated place away from children, pets and open flame.
Step 1
Choose stems while they are still in good condition
Drying does not reverse decay. Remove bruised, mouldy or collapsing flowers and keep only material that the seller identifies as appropriate for preservation.
Hydrangea, grasses and some textural stems may dry differently from soft, water-heavy flowers. A mixed bouquet may need to be separated rather than hung as one large mass.
Step 2
Create a small, ventilated bundle
Remove excess foliage, secure a small group and hang it so air can move around the flowers. Choose a dry, shaded location where falling petals will not create a slip or cleanup problem.
Avoid damp rooms and tightly packed bundles. Inspect the flowers during the process and discard material that develops an unpleasant odour or visible mould.
Step 3
Expect colour and shape to change
Dried flowers are a different product from the fresh bouquet. Colours can mute or deepen, petals can shrink and stems can become brittle.
Display dried material away from moisture and flame. Dust gently, handle as little as practical and retire the arrangement when it becomes damaged or difficult to keep clean.
